Location:Beacon Hill is a neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts, covering approximately one square mile and home to about 10,000 people. It is a neighborhood of Federal-style rowhouses and is known for its narrow, gas-lit streets and brick sidewalks. Today, Beacon Hill is regarded as one of the most desirable and expensive neighborhoods in the country.

Like many similarly named areas, the neighborhood is named for the location of a former beacon atop the highest point in central Boston, once located just behind the current site of the Massachusetts State House. The hill, and two other nearby hills, were substantially reduced in height to allow the development of housing in the area and to create land by filling part of the Back Bay at the foot of the hill.

The Beacon Hill area is located just north of the Boston Common and the Boston Public Garden and is generally bounded by Beacon Street on the south, Somerset Street on the east, Cambridge Street to the north and Storrow Drive along the riverfront of the Charles River Esplanade to the west. The block bounded by Beacon, Tremont and Park Streets is included as well, as is the Boston Common itself. The level section of the neighborhood west of Charles Street, on landfill, is known locally as the “Flat of the Hill”. - Wikipedia.com

Friday, May 9th, 2008

1 Primus Avenue - Unit 4 - Welcome to Beacon Hill where $427,000 gets you a whopping 600 square feet. Oh and it even has a washer dryer! This one is going to go quick

44 Grove Street - Unit 4 - Just around the corner from Primus Ave is 44 Grove Street, another two bedroom condo. This one comes with a few more square feet, 88 more to be exact, but the price tag comes in a little higher too, at $549,000. Greater Boston’s Best Neighborhoods

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

Boston.com has compiled a list of zip-codes within I-495 where single-family home prices (from 2002 to 2007) have retained their value or grown; where plenty of neighbors have college degrees and give to charitable organizations; where racial diversity is common; where lots of adults walk, bike, and take public transportation to work; and where restaurants and retail stores abound.

Here are their top 10…

  1. 02116 - Back Bay & South End
  2. 02445 - Brookline
  3. 02467 - Chestnut Hill
  4. 02138 - Cambridge
  5. 02118 - Roxbury & South End
  6. 02114 - Beacon Hill & West End
  7. 02446 - Brookline
  8. 02139 - Cambridge
  9. 02493 - Weston
  10. 02120 - Roxbury & Mission Hill

There are more if you are interested. What jumps out at me is that every zip-code here, with the exception of Weston (bastards are always bucking the trend), is a dense urban area. Maybe the Atlantic was right. Everyone is abandoning the suburbs.
