Buy a $170,000 Colorado Home for $500 Bucks

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

Looking for a brilliant way to sell a home? Raffle it off!

Frustrated as her house languished on the market for three straight summers, J.J. Rodgers is trying a new sales tactic: giving the two-story home away in an essay contest.

Already, she’s received more than 500 entries — each essay requires a $100 entry fee — for her four-bedroom home in Red Feather Lakes, Colo. She’s hoping for a minimum of 2,000 entries, or $200,000 in fees, by the May 25 deadline to pay off the mortgage, cover closing costs and have a little left over. Rodgers last listed the property at $169,000 after cutting the price three times. - Charlotte.com

This is seriously genius. Nobody wants this house at $170,000 but for $500 bucks, heck yeah it’s worth a shot. Americans, no scratch that, humans LOVE to gamble. If Governor Patrick ever gets his casino it’s gonna be big.

My hat is off to the seller is she is savvy enough to retain the rights to the winning essay. Can you say book deal?

The Most Prestigious Occupations

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

This is old but it’s worth a post. In 2006 Harris Interactive polled 1,020 adults to try and determine what the most prestigious occupations were.

Six occupations are perceived to have “very great” prestige by at least half of all adults - firefighters (63%), doctors (58%), nurses (55%), scientists (54%), teachers (52%) and military officers (51%). They are followed by police officers (43%) and priests/ministers/clergymen (40%).

By way of contrast, the list includes nine occupations which are perceived by less than 20 percent of adults to have “very great” prestige, with one of these under 10 percent. The lowest ratings for “very great prestige” go to real estate brokers (6%), stockbrokers (11%), business executives (11%), actors (12%), union leaders (12%), journalists (16%) bankers (17%), accountants (17%), and entertainers (18%).

There are three occupations that are perceived by one-quarter or more of adults to have “hardly any prestige at all.” These include union leaders (25%), real estate brokers (32%) and actors (37%). - Harris Interactive

Yep bottom of the pyramid again. Sigh, I guess it’s time to start practicing my fireman’s carry. I guess on the bright side, at least real estate agents are more prestegious that those good for nothing actors.

Greater Boston’s Best Neighborhoods

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

Boston.com has compiled a list of zip-codes within I-495 where single-family home prices (from 2002 to 2007) have retained their value or grown; where plenty of neighbors have college degrees and give to charitable organizations; where racial diversity is common; where lots of adults walk, bike, and take public transportation to work; and where restaurants and retail stores abound.

Here are their top 10…

  1. 02116 - Back Bay & South End
  2. 02445 - Brookline
  3. 02467 - Chestnut Hill
  4. 02138 - Cambridge
  5. 02118 - Roxbury & South End
  6. 02114 - Beacon Hill & West End
  7. 02446 - Brookline
  8. 02139 - Cambridge
  9. 02493 - Weston
  10. 02120 - Roxbury & Mission Hill

There are more if you are interested. What jumps out at me is that every zip-code here, with the exception of Weston (bastards are always bucking the trend), is a dense urban area. Maybe the Atlantic was right. Everyone is abandoning the suburbs.
